I’m still amazed and totally captivated by the raw power and beauty I saw on our photo and art expedition to Greenland’s Scoresby Sound aboard the three mast schooner Rembrandt Van Rijn.

With our small group of 17 guests, the ship was the perfect platform for sketching and photography—Scoresby Sound is a stunning fjord system along Greenland’s eastern coast.

The video above by Daisy Gilardini and David McEown captures the magic of early September: surprises in the light and weather, from glowing sunsets and the aurora borealis to a beautiful sunrise landing.

We had such special moments with wildlife—close encounters with Arctic hares, musk oxen, and polar bears.

While keeping an eye out for polar bears, I enjoyed painting small landscapes to catch the energy and mood of the fjords. I can already see several big studio paintings taking shape!

Exploring the fjords of Scoresby Sound with watercolour. Our ship and the landscape provided the perfect platform to sketch from, as excitement grew with every turn of a corner or approach to yet another spectacular iceberg.

I often work on two or three paintings on one piece of paper as the scene changes quickly. Breathe in the colours and shapes, take it through the heart … then make a mark on the paper! Let the wind, mist, and temperature play with the pigment while fully connecting with this place.
